THE LILLOOET INFANT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Dear community partners,

At the end of last month, the provincial government announced that the provincial offices for the Infant Development Program, Aboriginal Infant Development Program and Supported Child Development Program would be closed. These are all programs that are available in our community to support families with young children with disabilities. These closures will have a direct impact on programming province-wide and especially in small communities such as ours.

We are participating in a letter writing campaign and are calling on your support with this- individualized letters of support would be very much appreciated, and a template letter will also be available next week at our public rally that can be signed and sent. Please send hard copies as these are more effective than e-mails (see information below and attached documents for more information on this). We are also planning a public rally on Thursday, November 5th over the lunch hour in front of the post office. We will gather at the Family Place (Old Mill Plaza Mall) between 11:00 and 11:45 and will have sign-making materials available, as well as information to distribute. We will then make our way to the post office and set up there between noon and 1:00 pm to rally- this will be a quiet and non-intrusive rally aimed at raising the community's awareness on the issue, to distribute information, and to gather letters of support.

Please find attached a press release from our IDP provincial advisor, an IDP fact sheet from Moms on the Move, as well as addresses for the IDP letter-writing campaign. You can also visit the IDP blog to get more up to date information and see other letters of support at http://partnerships2009.blogspot.com/

This is a critical time to put pressure on government to reverse decisions that were made regarding the closure of provincial offices of IDP and other early intervention programs. Your help on this matter would be greatly appreciated and any letters of support for IDP and/or participation in the public rally would especially be useful. If you would like any further information or clarification on the issue of our provincial office closure and the termination of provincial and regional advisors' contracts, feel free to contact me here at the Family Place.

Warmly,
Terry Hurst
