Dr Maureen B.'s letter-draft

Maureen's Letter Draft:

Dear Premier,

It was with shock and enormous concern that I heard of the firing of the Provincial Coordinator on the Infant Development program of B.C. This woman and this office started a program for the families of children at risk that has become an example for the world. In the 34 years since it's inception it has become a standard for the delivery of care to families facing the challenges and problems of children with difficulties. Not only has it become internationally known, it ranks in the Province as one of the most efficeint and cost-effective programs ever developed in the health and human resource areas .

If there is some pressure to regionalize all services, this is one program that needs to retain a co-ordinator who is highly knowledgeable, deeply respected and whose record of service to the families of this province is impeccable. Regional goverments are necessary and a part of political life but this move to eliminate the Provincial coordinator of a highly successful and respected program makes no more sense than it would to eliminate the Provincial government and regionalize everything.

Additionally, the manner in which this was done is appalling. There was no consultation, no discussion and no respect for her years of dedication. As she is in the first stages of cancer treatment, the callous disregard for decency is almost beyond belief.

This regretable political decision must be rescinded and an apology issued not only to the program but to all the families of BC who so badly need and who so deeply appreciate the work of this remarkable staff.

Dr. Maureen Bendick
